INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELLING SKILLS AND THEORY (AGORED CYMRU VALIDATED)

Who can apply for this Course? This course is for you if you want to find out about counselling skills. You may already use active listening skills in your work or voluntary setting and would like to develop your skills further. Often people doing this Introduction are curious about counselling and come to find out more. You do not need any qualifications for this course. The open day and registration night is 5.30 to 7.30 on Wednesday 8th September.

 

Progression Routes Once you have completed this Introduction to Counselling you can go on to other counselling courses and gain qualifications. You can gain an Advanced Certificate in Counselling Skills at Welsh Psychotherapy Partnership, which forms the first year of the Advanced Diploma in Relational Centred Counselling (ADRCC). Non-graduate students will be able to progress on to the ADRCC whilst graduate students will be able to access the Advanced Diploma in Gestalt or Integrative Psychotherapy. Details of these courses are given on the website. Both progression routes will lead to a UKCP recognised qualification and license to practice.

2010 Programme Details   

This is a two part course validated by Agored Cymru (formerly OCN Wales). The core trainer is Julia Martin who has taught counselling skills in a variety of settings for over 10 years.  

 

The course is tailored towards people who are working in the care sector and who wish to develop their skills, and also towards those who wish to embark on a career in Counselling or Psychotherapy.  

 

 

Course Philosophy

Good communication and interaction skills are essential for developing healthy relationships with clients, colleagues - even friends and family! 

 

This course will enable you to develop and practice these essential skills in a safe and confidential environment.    

 The course is taught using a variety of teaching and learning methods, which aim to enhance the learning experience of each student.

 

Course Requirements 

 

The course is run in two parts:

 

Part 1 runs for 12 weeks and stands alone, or can be followed by  

Part 2, which runs for a further 18 weeks. 

 

 

 

PART 1 - covers 2 modules at level 2:  

 Basic counselling skills (Agored Cymru National Code PS12CY010) 

 Counselling Reflective Journal (Code PS12CY008) 

 

Throughout the 12 weeks, students will develop a portfolio of completed tasks which comprise of written exercises, evidence of skills and a brief reflective journal.

 

80% Attendance and successful completion of all tasks is required to gain a certificate of achievement.

 

PART 2 - covers 3 modules at level 3: 

Reflective Practice and Personal Development (code PS13CY006) 

Ethics and Practice (code PS13CY014)  

Reflective Journal (code PS13CY016) 

 

Assessment evidence for part 2 will again be gathered into a portfolio which will include extended written tasks, evidence of further skills development and a reflective journal.

Students can exit at this point having gained 6 level 2 credits, or can continue for a further 18 weeks:

 Welsh Language

 The course will be delivered in English. However, if you wish to have support through the medium of Welsh we will work with the Welsh Language Board to facilitate Welsh into the learning process. We actively encourage Welsh speakers to apply to do the training
